An inspiration for bicycle adventure

When we were kids we were inseparable from our bikes - they were our independence. The wind was in our hair and blew tears into our eyes. Life was a great adventure.

Journey is about recapturing that childhood sense of adventure.

Adventure doesn't have to be as complicated as a round the world trip. It isn't best left to professional 'adventurers'. It is all about the willingness to try something new, to experience something a little bit different. It is something that fits into everyday life. It is something that reminds us how beautiful life is.

Journey is about experiencing the power of adventure: the thrill of the unexpected, the pride of achievement, the sheer unadulterated fun

Within the pages we'll investigate how seasoned cyclists can add adventure to their riding. We'll discover how new riders are using their bicycles to see their locale through fresh eyes. We'll watch a bicycle turn a commute from a workday chore into an early morning adventure. We'll mix cycling with sightseeing with cafes with picnics with warm summer days. We'll get under the skin of riders leaving mobile phone reception far behind. We'll join the fun of group rides and weekends away. We'll learn how families are bonding on bicycle rides and tours. We'll disappear deep into the New Zealand bush, popping out somewhere on the other side. We'll hear from overseas adventurers and listen to how they keep life on the bike exciting. We'll attend organised rides and races, to see how events can be a catalyst for adventure.

Journey is about you: People who have discovered, or want to discover, a taste for adventure and the childhood joy of riding a bicycle.

The longest night: a midwinter journey

In midwinter 2012 four adventurers rode through the night, covering 270 kilometres in eighteen cold and wet hours.

Here's the story as it appeared in volume 1 of Journey (click to download the pdf).

In June 2013 we will repeat the trip, with more riders, travelling in the opposite direction, hopefully with less rain.
